Es gibt ja vielleicht Menschen, die mich für eingebildet halten. Vermutlich habe ich noch viele Verhaltensweisen aus der Zeit beibehalten, als ich verkaufen musste. Da neigt man dazu, die Dinge "ins rechte Licht" ( ? ! ) zu rücken. Ironisch gemeint, ins rechte Licht ist übersteigert und hat nichts mit "richtig darstellen" zu tun.

Ich bin mir meiner Werte durchaus bewusst, doch es gibt manches, wo ich mir nicht so sicher bin. Das betrifft meine Fähigkeiten beim Klavierspiel.
Jetzt hat mir ein Klavierprofessor empfohlen, die Hammerklavier-Sonate einzustudieren. Ehrlich gesagt, bin ich selber nicht so überzeugt, dass ich die überhaupt schaffe. Einer hat es vor ein paar Jahren schon angedeutet, als ich ihm von meinem Vorhaben erzählte, alle Beethoven-Sonaten spielen zu wollen. Das war Roland Batik, ein bekannter Pianist und Komponist. Er meinte nur: "Hans, das wirst Du machen!"

Gestern rief ich Prof Paul Badura-Skoda an, um ihm zu seinem Konzert zu gratulieren, dass ich leider nur indirekt miterleben konnte. Er ist jetzt 91. Im Zuge des Gesprächs erwähnte ich auch das geplante Konzertprogramm für 2019: Schubert DV958 und die Hammerklaviersonate.
Er schien überhaupt nicht überrascht und meinte: ein sehr schweres und anspruchsvolles Programm. Es klang keine Spur von Skepsis dabei mit. Er kennt meine Fähigkeiten, weil ich auch bei ihm Klavierstunden erhielt.
Tres sunt collegium. Das betrifft zwar Vorlesungen, die dann gehalten werden, wenn mindestens zwei Hörer vorhanden sind. Aber für mich ist es jetzt doch eine gewisse Bestätigung. Wenn mir drei professionelle Pianisten von Weltrang zutrauen, die Sonate üben zu können, kann ich es vielleicht wirklich :)

Nachtrag: (obwohl meine Postings eh fast niemand lesen wird) Die Hammerklaviersonate opus 106 von Beethoven ist die schwerste Sonate und eines der schwersten seiner Klavierwerke. Die Diabelli-Variationen sind vielleicht noch schwerer. Aber schon die Tempobezeichnungen sind so, dass die meisten Pianisten sich nicht an Beethoven's Vorgaben halten. Und vielleicht hat ja auch Beethoven's Metronom nicht richtig geschlagen :)

Heute abends werde ich ausnahmsweise ein Stück auswendig spielen. Das mache ich sonst nicht. Doch bei zwei Seiten hoffe ich auf das Fehlen von Aussetzern.
Normalerweise erkläre ich, dass selbst der berühmte Svatoslav Richter nur mehr mit Noten gespielt hat, als er 60 Jahre alt war und diese Grenze überschritten hat.
Ich mache es als Training für den nächsten Konzertplan. Der sieht nämlich die Hammerklaviersonate vor. Und die Fuge muss man eigentlich auswendig können, wie auch den 1. und 2. Satz.

Today, I have made an observation which sounds very primitive when you state it:

in playing piano you must be totally concentrated on the music.
What would you mean by total concentration. Let me give an example: when you drive a car, you can listen to music, you could talk to passengers (which is not allowed for bus drivers). Anyway, if you lose the concentration on the road ahead of you for even a second, the car will still drive in straight line and if there is no car in front of you suddenly stopping, nothing bad will happen.
Many people are talking about multi-tasking. But that functions only on a time slicing method, you are alternately thinking about the various tasks.

I was always admiring how players could play piano and talk at the same time. My father could do that. Famous entertainers can do that. I can manage to say one sentence and then recover to concentration. I believe that my capability of playing prima vista and playing difficult pieces reading the scores is basically just the technique of concentration just on the music.

For tomorrow's performance I have "learned" a small piece by heart. I can even lay in bed in play it to myself in my head. However, when I sit at the piano playing and just one strange thought crosses my head, I am doomed for an error. This is not because of technical difficulties. Obviously, my mind must be connected to the fingers in a very direct mode. (On a computer it would be called DMA, direct memory access.) Any irritation on that mode would cause an interruption.

Of course, after more time of practicing you might achieve a sort of mechanical routine. With some exercises it is even intended and probably achieved.
For me that is not so easy. And I would even say, that once I have achieved that mechanical perfection, the musical attraction for this piece fades away.

Afterthough: the total concentration was possible for me when I worked on a program, actually direct coding. I could keep the concentration for two or three hours. I believe that the state of total concentration is related to "the flow" which is described by Mihály Csíkszentmihályi.

... war immer schon mein Ding. Aber etwas hat sich verändert. Faul war ich schon immer: zu faul zum Üben, zu ungeduldig, um etwas zu Ende zu führen. Nicht nur bei Klavierspiel. Beim "Arbeiten", das ja eigentlich auch Lustgewinn war, habe ich tatsächlich einige Projekte bis zum Ende durchgezogen. Es wundert mich heute noch, wie ich das manchmal geschafft habe.

Aber jetzt hat sich einiges geändert. Vor allem, was das Klavierspielen angeht. Ich wundere mich selbst über meine Geduld, mit der ich mich durch schwierige Stellen durchkämpfe. Und ich bekomme auch die notwendigen Streicheleinheiten. Von Leuten, die mein Spiel beurteilen und das auch können. Universitätsprofessoren im Musikfach.

Ich muss jetzt mein eigener Lehrer sein. Aber das scheine ich mittlerweile zu beherrschen.

Im Selbstbefehlen war ich nicht so gut. Es gibt ja so viel, an dem man sich erfreuen kann. Im Ernstfall galt Freude vor Pflicht. (Ich war glücklich, dass die beiden manchmal übereingestimmt haben.)

Aber jetzt besteht die Freude oder der Genuss darin, etwas so spielen zu können, wie ich es selber gerne hören würde. Das ist fast noch besser als Vögeln.

Aber es wird wohl niemand deswegen nach Belgrad fahren :) (8.12.2018)

The evening is dedicated to the music of Ludvig van Beethoven, - to the piano sonatas composed by Beethoven.
Each of his 32 piano sonatas is unique. The collection of the four sonatas for this evening is taken out of a period from 1795 till 1809, they are taken from the first and the second period of Beethoven's sonatas' compositions.
You might have never listened to these sonatas, however each one has a little story to tell.
Starting with number 20, the opus number is misleading. The sonata has been composed much earlier and was published much earlier than the other sonatas of this evening. Maybe Beethoven just did not need money so urgently when the sonata was composed. It is an easy piece to play, but it is ranked as a sonata.

The next sonata number 11 denotes the end of the first set of the sonata compositions. As simple as it appears at the first glance, it is piece to show off. Beethoven introduced in it various pianistic structures that were not to be found in the piano literature earlier, neither by Beethoven himself nor by another composer.
Beethoven seems to have wanted to show off also his own pianistic capabilities.

The next sonata number 18 is not dedicated to a special donator, but it has a nickname: "the hunt". Especially the last movement has been responsible for this name. However, this sonata is also lacking a "slow" movement, although it is a grand sonata with four movements.

The last sonata number 24 is very special by its own properties. It is played in recitals very seldomly. It is dedicated to the sister of one aristocratic lady which is assumed to be the "immortal love", so addressed by Beethoven. It is short, just ten minutes. It changes Beethoven's style of expression to a more lyrical one.

Biography:

The life of Hans Hartmann has been connected to music for his whole life. Since when he was five years old he used to play together with his father most of the classic literature that was transcribed for piano for four hands. Bach, Händel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler, symphonies or chambre music was played prima vista most of the times.
From his tenth birthday for the following eight years his musical education was guided by Dr. Kurt Anton Hueber, composer and music scientist, president of the international society for ekmelian music.
His musical education was continued somewhat later when he was export director in the famous grand piano factory of Bösendorfer. During this time he was exposed to the best pianists of the time, receiving lessons every now and then on his various trips to asia and Russia. One of his teachers was Alexander Satz, professor at the Royal college in London.
His last education he received by Paul Badura-Skoda.
His current goal is the presentation of all Beethoven sonatas.
The current program he has played in Perchtoldsdorf/Vienna, Halle/Saale, Meißen, Coburg, Weimar and Linz.
He is known to deliver short introductions to the pieces of his programs.
